Child welfare

http://www.10tv.com/article/police-investigating-video-showing-apparent-sex-columbus-classroom

This article talks about a 16 year old boy and a 16 year old girl who appear to be taking part in some sort of sexual act in class. The article talks a lot about the substitute teacher that was in the classroom and the fact that other students were recording it and laughing about it, and then posted it online, where it has been shared thousands of times on many social media platforms. The principal declined to speak to the media, but did send out a letter to families apologizing.

This article is shocking to the community which is understandable, but it's also a time for those working in the school district and the school to come together to better educate their students about social media, healthy relationships and boundaries.

  1. This incident brings up anger and disappointment toward many systems but I think I'm most upset by the realization that these types of incidents take place largely because of the cultural view of sex that is in our society. Even hearing the police officer in the video was disappointing. Rather than speak to the illegal actions of the participants, including the teacher, he chose to highlight the danger of posting the video, which was a resulting act of the main scenario.

  2. Morgan,
This story, like many others now, bring social media into play. The girls' mother says she has faced online harassment as a result of the video. Unfortunately, I don't think this is uncommon. Teenagers are using social media all of the time, and expose much of their lives to the rest of the world. I wonder the impact this has had on her. Will she continue to use social media, at all?

Also, people on the internet can be very mean. I can imagine she's had some awful things said to her that no one should ever experience. Ultimately, she is still a child, and I do believe we have a responsibility to protect and help as a community. However, this has the potential to be an opportunity for educating youth, and I hope the school takes advantage of that.

    1. I agree completely. I feel social media is doing such harm to adolescents in a way that they aren't able to understand yet.

  3. Where was the substitute teacher? What was the student-teacher ratio? Regardless of these answers, the situation could have been completely avoided. I don't think students this age understand the meaning and the damage that can be done with something like this on social media, and the effects it can cause.
