Child Abuse Registry

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865672134/Mileys-Bill-calls-for-felony-child-abuse-registry.html

The news article that I found deals with creating a registry such as the one for sex offenders, but this one would deal with individuals who have committed crimes against children of child abuse. The article starts with the background of a particular case that this bill would be named after. In other words, a child by the name of Miley ,who was shaken by her father. The article states that he abused her and then called the her grandmother who discovered her lifeless granddaughter. The sad thing is that he shook her out of frustration and left her to be to be by  herself before he even called for any help.

In all honesty, reading this story makes my blood boil and I begin to get sick to my stomach. The father of this child did get a felony and up to fifteen years behind bars, but after he serves his time, he will be able to go on with his life. The abuse that he inflicted on Miley was abuse that damaged her for the rest of her life. For example, the grandmother states that she has to continue to undergo speech therapy as well as physical therapy. The life of this child and her family is forever changed in not on an emotional sense but a financial sense as well.

So, this bill has been proposed by the grandmother to make sure that Miley is not forgotten and that the correct punishment is given to this man. The article states that the hope for this bill is to have a registry placed on the sex offender registry website. A man by the name of Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clearfield not only wants this to be placed on the sex offender website, but he wants it to be able to be placed alone.  Not only does this representative support this idea, but groups such as the Bikers Against Child Abuse do as well. The House of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Committee are two others to support the idea of this bill.Reading this  made me proud that there are people who are such advocates for the rights of children and know that child abuse should not go unnoticed.

As a result of this article, the bill is still in the workings and it is the hope of all of those that support it that this registry can stand on its very on while being a voice for these children who have been abused. Miley can no longer live out the life that she was meant to due to her father taking this away from her. Awareness needs to be given to this issue.

  1. I love that this is becoming a thing. I do not understand why something like this hasn't happened yet alongside the sex offender registry. I think it is such a large issue, comparable if not a more common issue than sexual assault, that should be made available to the public. This would be fair because child abuse affects the child's development and could ultimately change their mental state forever, and so the offender needs fair punishment for doing such a cruel act. This advocates for children's rights if this can become effective and would definitely highlight the offender as a red flag and possibly protect others from abuse.
